Most countertop companies measure your kitchen, cut a slab to match, and set it. We do one thing before that, and it is the reason this site exists: we put a level on the cabinets and we do not template until the run reads flat.

Why That Is the Whole Job

Stone is rigid. It has no give in it. Set a slab across a run of cabinets where one box sits an eighth of an inch low, and the slab does not settle into the dip. It spans it, resting on the high points at either side, with an unsupported void underneath.

That void is where the trouble starts. It is why seams open, why an undermount sink slowly pulls loose, why a hairline appears at the corner of a cooktop cutout eighteen months in. From above, all of those look like stone problems. Underneath, every one of them is a levelling problem that shipped with the job.

What We Actually Do About It

We survey the whole run with a long level and a laser line, front to back and end to end, and we write the numbers down rather than eyeballing it. Low boxes get composite shims driven from both sides so the shim bears along its length instead of touching at the tip. Then we recheck after the fasteners are tightened, because tightening moves things.

Only then does the template happen. Templating first just records the crookedness accurately.

Riverside Specifics

Two kinds of kitchen here, failing in opposite directions. The newer slab-on-grade tracts out past the 60 often had cabinets set quickly on concrete that was still curing, so the floor moved after the boxes did. The older homes in the Wood Streets and along Victoria Ave have settled as far as they are going to settle, which sounds worse and is actually easier: whatever is out of level has stopped moving, so a correction there is permanent.

The Honest Version

If your cabinets are genuinely flat, this is a short conversation and we say so. Plenty of kitchens survey clean and need nothing. We would rather tell you that and price the stone than invent an hour of work.
