A countertop template is a record of a shape. If the shape you record is crooked, the slab you cut from it is a crooked slab cut very accurately.

So the order matters. Level the boxes, then template. Not the other way round, and not both on the same visit with the levelling squeezed in while the template gear is already set up.

How We Survey a Run

A four foot level tells you about four feet. A kitchen run is rarely four feet, so we use a long level for the local reading and a laser line for the whole span, and we take readings in both directions: along the run, and front to back across each cabinet.

Front to back matters more than people expect. A box that is dead level along the run but tipped forward puts the front edge of the stone low and the back edge high, which shows up as a widening gap at the backsplash and a top that feels like it is shedding water toward you.

We write the readings down at each box. Eyeballing a bubble and remembering it is how a quarter inch gets lost.

The tolerances we work to:

• About an eighth of an inch across the entire run.
• About a sixteenth across any single cabinet.
• Front to back, flat enough that a marble does not choose a direction.

Shimming That Actually Bears

Composite shims, not cedar, because cedar compresses over years under a stone load and gives the low spot back.

The shim goes in from both sides of the cabinet base so it bears along its length rather than touching at the tip. A shim that only contacts at its thin end is a point load, which is precisely the thing we are trying to eliminate. It gets trimmed flush and then we recheck, because driving fasteners home moves a cabinet a surprising amount.

Where a box is out because the wall is out rather than the floor, the fix goes on the wall cleat instead. Older Riverside homes with plaster over lath frequently wave enough along a wall to throw the back edge of a run, and shimming the floor there just tips the box.

Then the Template

Digital template once the run reads flat. On a kitchen where the wall itself is not straight, and in the Wood Streets that is most of them, we template the scribe as well so the back edge of the stone follows the plaster instead of leaving a tapering gap that has to be filled with caulk and hope.

We also mark seam intentions at template rather than leaving them to the saw. A seam wants to land over a cabinet division, where there is structure underneath it, and away from a sink or cooktop cutout, where the stone is already narrow.

When It Is Not Needed

Some runs survey clean. New cabinets set carefully on a flat floor by somebody who checked as they went are genuinely flat, and if yours are, we will tell you and move straight to templating.

The point is not to sell an extra line item. It is that nobody currently checks, so nobody knows which kitchen they have.

Getting It Looked At

If cabinets are going in soon, this is the cheap moment. Correcting a run before it carries anything takes an hour or two. Correcting one after a slab is bonded to it means lifting the slab first, and the lift is the expensive part.
